Just got my FOID and pistol permit - Beretta 92FS vs. SIG P226 Navy or SAS

These are the 2 guns I am in love with. Although, I am new to the whole scene of firearms - to me, these 2 I love both aesthetically and its application in both Police forces and Navy Seals / British SAS.

Eventually I will buy both, but it'll take me another 4-6 weeks to obtain another NJ Pistol Purchase Permit, so I want to make the right initial decision to buy and go to the range / practice field stripping and disassembling.

I went to a couple of gun dealers in my area, and pretty much decided, i want to buy a used model. I saw Obin's post about the SIG P225/P6 from AIM and I found a 92FS for sale online for $280 less than a new model from my gun dealer.

From experience, can you guys tell me the pros and cons of both?

The Beretta is a large gun. If you dont have large hands, you may not like the grip of it for use. If you've played with it and are ok with the size, then so be it.

Both are relatively quality guns. I've never been a real fan of the Beretta and I absolutely love Sigs (I own 4). I like the way they handle better, they are very accurate out of the box and their reliability is virtually unmatched. They simply go bang EVERY time you pull the trigger.

If you're eventually going to get both, then whats another few months to wait. Just buy whichever one you can find now for a good deal and get the other later.

Yes, I've held both in my hands before, and they both fit fine. To me the P226 was a little heavier, but its not a major issue to me.

the 92FS and the SigP226 are both good guns. it's going to have to come down to your personal preference. spend a saturday afternoon with both and let yourself be the judge. you might find that one gun edges out the other for one reason or another.

from my experience the Beretta is a few ounces heavier. that might seem like a con but it does help to tame recoil a little. the Beretta is a bit thicker in the grip but some people find this more comfortable.

the Sig doesn't have a manual safety/disconnector like the Beretta does. some people might find that to be a con.

honestly you are just going to have to try both and see what feels better to you. good luck and have fun!!!

Dislike DA/SA on the Beretta. Must suggest SIG239 SAS myself. Long trigger pull but clean break, I can shoot it more accurately than my XD-40SC.

The 92FS is a smooth firing pistol and is fun at the range. But I'll still take a 1911 variant with a double stack mag.

X2. Four yrs ago I ordered a P226 9mm from my local dealer/indoor range. While waiting on it I rented 4-5 different 9mm and loved the way the 92FS felt in my hand. Low and behold they had a used "Made in Italy" 92FS the following week and it was in MINT condition! I paid $520 for it and I fire ~150 rounds through both guns about once per month going on 4 yrs. Neither has ever let me down. If I had to make a "you could only take one with you" choice...I'd take the Beretta just on personal feel and accuracy, even though the Sig cost me much more $. My father- and brother-in-law, who between them have over 20 semi-auto pistols and favor Sigs and Glocks love the look and feel of my 92FS but admit that it's not made for their smaller hands. Like it's been said 100 times...all personal preference and you can't really go wrong with either one.

IIRC it doesn't, or it's a pia to use.

the 92FS/M9 has a decocker/safety mounted on the slide. it's easy to reach with your thumb. the Beretta 92D has a decocker on the slide that does not act as a safety. the 92D is DAO and functions like the SIG.

Ummm, why does a DAO weapon need a decocker? If its DAO, the hammer always comes back down to the ready position after every shot and doesnt stay cocked.

sorry, typo. lemme do that again:
the 92G has a decocker on the slide that does not act as a safety. the 92D is DAO. the 92G functions like the SIG.
