I bought a Kirby off eBay years ago after growing up with one for 20+ years. I like the retro look, and while heavy, the "Tech-Drive" transmission makes maneuvering easy.

I got tired of buying a new vac every other year and bought an Oreck Commerical unit. Works great and is super light. I wish it was bagless but other than that I love it.

oh and a 35ft power cord FTW

I have always heard good things about the Oreck's.

We have a consumer version. 8-lbs-POS Horrible vacuum. Not worth the money.

I just bought a Bissel for my parents, a healthy home. We vacuumed the house with the oreck, then with the bissel. We filled the bissel after 1/2 a room. Full, with sand and dirt, and god only knows. We filled up 1/4 of a kitchen garbage bag with dirt from the floor.

My parents had an old Oreck XL commercial unit that finally died after 25+ years (I'm 34 and they had this thing as long as I could remember). They loved it. So I bought them a new Oreck to replace it as a gift. I also bought myself one as well since they were so dependable. I just love how light and easy to use it is. My sister also uses them for her home cleaning business. I do feel they are overpriced for what they are made of. I mean, those materials/motors couldn't cost them more than $10.

    my parents have/had central vac.
then they bought a dyson to get the fur from their golden retriever puppy.
the first use was full of black hair from their lab...R.I.P. he died 8 months ago.

We got one of the Kenmore Progressive Upright Vacuum with Inteli-Clean System's from Sears for the Rock Climbing Gym I work at. Chalk dust and dog hair are the main issues we deal with. We used to use a canister vac, but we had to clean all the filters and crap so often it was pointless. We switched to a bag vac instead, it works much better.

I have two canister vacs at home, they are terrible. One use of the bag one we have at work would change your mind.

Even a stopped clock gives the right time twice a day.

Just thought I'd share that Best Buy is running a promotion until 2/20/2010, the Dyson DC17 Animal (not the newest model) is selling for $330 in store only with a coupon.

The direct link I have is https://myrewardzone.bestbuy.c...27894 but you may have to be a RewardZone member and just search for it yourself, but it's out there and I just used it today. Regular price is $549.99. I know the D17 is the older model, but not much on the DC25 seems to have changed except for the "ball" drive so the $193 price difference really appealed to me. Even if you buy the DC25 at Bed Bath and Beyond with the 20% coupon, this DC17 is still about $90 cheaper. So.... in case anyone cared haha

Kirby is the most reliable but nobody is going to spend $1300 for a vacuum cleaner. Kenmore is almost as good.

    Kenmore Intuition 28014 canister $472
    Kenmore Progressive 35922 upright $220

    For cheap money:
Hoover Tempo Widepath U5140-900 upright. $68 with free shipping on Amazon. Buy some 3M filtrete HEPA bags for it. When it breaks, just go on Amazon and get another one.
