So I've got a real nice 73 Ariens snow blower. 10hp, 32" cut. No rust and in great shape. Only problem is that the gov on the engine went out last weekend, the engine hit VTEC and seized. The local small engine shop was $350 for a new 10hp unit installed. Fix it or scrap it?

I just Googled an 11HP Tecumseh Snow King engine - $395.
$350 installed sounds like a great deal.

I don't know if it's the right application but I know Harbor Freight sells brand new 4 stroke engines for $100-$200.

i bought an engine from northern tool for a rototiller, dirt cheap

fix it older ariens are one of the best snow blowers made to date newer units have samller augers and weaker gearboxes and just don't cut near as well. look around in local classifieds or just buy a new motor for northern tool as mentioned before. its a simple task to swap a motor on one as its al one unit

Fit it up and keep it. I'd keep your eyes peeled for a parts machine of the same vintage with a good engine. That way you'd have some extra parts here and there when you need them.

I think we might have a 10 horse tech. engine laying around at our shop. I'll look at our used engines and give you specs. and price tomorrow.

You can't buy a new 10hp one for anywhere near $350. If the machine is in overall good shape, I would throw a new motor at it and call it a day.

If you don't want it, I'll take it.![]()
