Thread: Who does Surf Rock?

  1. 06-14-2003 02:45 PM #1
I only know of a few bands that play surf rock and I really like it I was wondering if anybody knew of any other bands. The ones that I listen to are Pixies, Frank Black and the Catholics, Link Ray, and Dick Dale. For the ones of you that don't know Frank Black was also in the Pixies.

    Mermen

    Los Straightjackets ...

I dunno if I'd call the pixies surf rock -- well, I guess their later stuff would be ... earlier stuff was more of a post-punk-kitchen-sink

  3. 06-14-2003 04:29 PM #3
If you can find their stuff there used to be a local band here in Portland, OR that was called Surf Trio. The name sounds cheesey but they were like Surf/Punk/Pop. Or also another group was called Satan's Pilgrims, and I think they are also from around here.

Agent Orange's "Living In Darkness" has a couple of surf-rock inspired tracks.

  11. 06-16-2003 12:08 PM #11
    hell yah on Agent Orange!

Bloodstains....mmm classic punk rock that would send mr jack johnson running for his nouveau jimmy buffet surfer hippie fantasy world

    but moving on...

I agree on the los straitjackets suggestion. Also, shadowy men on a shawody planet were really good (kids in the hall theme song too!).

The pixies were like surf rock meets 'X' meets late model Husker Du

  12. 06-16-2003 02:45 PM #12
    yeah, shadowy men rules.

    also, check out man?...or astroman.
    they are quality surf/space rock.

  13. 06-16-2003 05:05 PM #13
    Naked City.....(on a few albums)

    What about the Beach Boys?

  14. 06-16-2003 05:21 PM #14
the beach boys are more on the psychedelic pop end of things, but they did sing about surfing...

  15. 06-16-2003 06:39 PM #15
    They "were" surfing.....

  16. 06-16-2003 06:53 PM #16
    My vote is for:

    Huevos Rancheros

If you ever find that they are playing at a bar near you.
    GO!!!

    You won't regret it.
They put on one hell of a high energy show.

There is a awesome local surf-rock band that goes by the name of the one night standards. I doubt you'd be able to find anything by them though.

My dad was in a surf-rock cover band in the Philippines in the 60s.

They used to cover stuff by The Ventures, The Shadows, Jan and Dean and the Beach Boys.

The Ventures were cool. I get a kick out of them... they did Tequila and Hawaii 5-0. I love a song of theirs called Telstar or something....

Funny how they 'were surfing' but they couldn't/didn't surf....

My favorite Beach Boys stuff is the later non-surf music,IE Pet Sounds, Smile(or Smiley Smile, whatever they called it),or the ironically titled Surf's Up .

As for " Real" surf music,I like Dick Dale, the Ventures,The Mermen, and I say Agent Orange is surf rock.

BTW,anybody know where to find those old surf movies on DVD? Endless Summer seems to be the only one widely available.

I saw the Ventures at Toad's Place in New Haven, CT in the early 80s. I must have 70 or so Ventures albums in the basement.

    I second Man or Astroman?
    Also Laika and the Cosmonauts

  24. 06-20-2003 10:41 PM #24
Me I've been playing instrumental surf for 16 years.
    Seriously though...
All of the above mentioned bands are really awsome. You can never go wrong with Shadowy Men on a Shadowy planet, Man or Astro Man, and Los Straighjackets (awsome live shows). Some other really good ones are The Bomboras, The Sentinals, The Chantays, The Penetrators, The Lively Ones, and The Marketts.
That should be enough for the hodads for now.

nice thread! (my username is a direct referance to surf music!)

Yeah! I'm seeing some nice bands here!
Man Or Astroman are great, I saw them live once, and they put on a crazy show.

    The Aqualads
    The Phantom Surfers
Hot Rod Moses (AWESOME fuzz surf punk)
    The Volcanos
    Jon and The Nightriders
    The Atlantics
    The Ultras
    The Ghastly Ones (Great spook-surf)
The Space Cossacks (very talented, smoothly played surf)
    The Treble Spankers
The Bomboras (Farfisa and fuzz guitar, it does NOT get better.)
    Jackie and The Cedrics
The Makers (Devil's Nine Questions album, instrumental garage rock on the verge of surf)
    The Silencers
    The Phantom 5ive
    The Treblemakers

My friend was in a great surf band called Club Wash from here in Portland, they put out a 7 inch.

Someone mentioned Satan's Pilgrims, they were a really top-notch surf band, and at their high-point had THREE guitars!

You might want to look for some Pebbles or Nuggets collections of early surf bands, sometimes they are the most interesting, because they've got crazy ideas.
