    And Wagon

    From ItaliaSpeed:

"The revised Alfa Romeo 166, to be officially launched at next month's Frankfurt Motor Show, is presented in this exclusive artist's impression. External changes will include a new bonnet, redesigned wings, new bumpers, larger headlamps and a revised range of alloy wheels.

The facelift, which was developed in-house at the Alfa Romeo Centro Stile, concentrates on the front end of the car. Now fashioning similar styling traits to the GT Coupe, with the grille and intake graphic bearing obvious resemblance, the revitalised 166 is set to represent Alfa Romeo in the luxury saloon segment until 2005. Round 156-style fog lamps appear in the intake grilles, which will probably be finished with chrome 'whiskers' as found on the mainstream 147. This will aim to provide the flagship car with an added air of luxury and will furthermore balance it's sporty yet refined appearance.

Larger bi-Xenon headlamps look to give the 166 a bolder face, a feature which was often criticised on the original design. The headlamps have circular detailing as on the recent Giugiaro-revised 156 and will also offer better illumination qualities.

The traditional Alfa shield, which is similar to that present on the GT Coupe, is more prominently positioned giving the 166 a stronger look. The bonnet appears to be slightly more sculpted, with creases streaming from the grille in typical Alfa Romeo fashion. Apart from the new muscular front wings, the side remains unaltered, whilst the only change to the rear is a larger bumper and new tail light outlines.

The engine range will be beefed up, with the entry level 2.0 Twin Spark being replaced with the new 2.0 JTS unit. The new 175 bhp 20V 2.4 JTD will also mark it's entry in the 166 after making it's debut recently in the revised 156. The 2.5 V6 carries over from the old model, however the top-of-the-range version will now feature the 3.2 V6 from the 147 GTA and 156 GTA models. The JTD and V6 petrol versions will both offer Selespeed transmission for the first time.

An 166 GTA will rapidly follow the introduction of the facelifted range, which Alfa hope will raise the profile of the often overlooked 166 range. The GTA version will use the 3.5 V6 engine first seen in the 156 GTAm concept at last December's Bologna Motor Show. The engine will be tuned to produce around 300 bhp."

    that wagon is ugly, imo

I was in Europe right about the time the 166's originally came out. We were at a rest station, and a 166 pulled up and parked next to a Lexus GS. The Lexus, which was a pretty succesful car for its time, looked like a bar of wet soap compared to the clean lines of the Alfa.

Has there always been a 166 wagon, or is that a new model? Looks pretty sharp.

The wagon isn't bad looking, but something about the design just screams "mid 90s"...hmm.

Overall the 166 is one of their older designs, that's true. But they are basically giving it new front and back fascias and upgrading the interior until the all new model comes out. I like the front a lot (go to Italiaspeed.com to see it - dont' know why it isnt' showing up) but haven't seen the back end of the sedan, only the wagon. No interior shots either, but hopefully they will improve on this too, just as in the updated 156.

Here's what it looks like now thought:

    AFAIK, it's new.

...... and there is no way a GS has more presence than a 166.

You don't expect to live beyond 2007?

Alfa returns to the US in 2007

Yeah Alfa is supposed to come back in 2007 with a entirely new lineup of cars - the 148, 158, 168, Alfa GT Coupe, a new *GTV* (it could have another name) and convertible as well as a crossover based on the *Kamal* concept. From the looks of it they've going in the right direction. A few years afterwards they say that Lancia might be making a comeback here too.

HELLO massive front and rear overhangs.

Here's something I came across that mentions Alfa's Brera, but called Evoluta, for 2006. I've also read that they might call it the TZ3 (historical reference). Here's what I found from this site: http://www.webwombat.com.au/mo...s.htm

"Starting with the Alfa Romeo Evoluta, which isn't due to go on sale until 2006, it aims to spruce up the Alfa brand by not only offering a prolific power-to-weight ratio, but also playing on the marque's rich heritage.

For example, the new Italian coupe is the first Alfa in recent history to offer a rear-wheel drive transmission. Furthermore, the styling is also very reminiscent of past Alfa's, particularly those built during the '50s and '60s.

Alfa has bold plans for the Evoluta too, with the words 'Porsche' and 'Ferrari' often followed by 'killer'."

Oh, and here are pics of the Alfa GT Coupe, the *Sprint* as it was known in the past.
