lip looks different, but i'm pretty sure that's just a 951 (944 turbo) /944 convertible front end.

it may have come on other 944 derivatives as well.

That's the early NA 944 bumper. The turbos all had the smooth one shown above, which was also used on the 944 S2 (NA).

The front lip is an aftermarket piece...

anyone who specializes in aftermarket Porsche racing parts can make one for you. it's just a piece of flexible rubber. the body is totally stock though.

cool car huh

It doesn't look like just a piece of garden trim to me, it's definitely molded into that shape.

$1200 for a clutch? huh?!? depends on what you have installed and replaced at the same time. don't forget that a Porsche clutch lasts a LOT longer than ones that other manufacturers use.

what would 4000 get me in terms of a 944? i want turbo, but i dont see that happening, i rather spend $140 on ebay to get the better bumper.

Post Title: Re: Is this stock, what body kit? (jbell)

You can get a 944 turbo for $4000. It wiil have about 145,000 miles on it and need lots of work. Find a nice car 85.5 or newer for around $7,000. Earlier models have a truly frightening interior. Look for a car that has been owned by someone that bought it because it is a Porsche and not someone that has raced the car. A lot of well maintained garage cars are coming up for sale lately and the market for the 944 is picking up. Especially a turbo in nice condition is going to cost you now. I am always on the lookout for a nice 944, or even a not so nice 944 as I would like to make it a track car, and I now have the extra garage space because I bought the house.

what about a n/a for $4000, what do you think that will be like?

Post Title: Re: Is this stock, what body kit? (jbell)
Posted by: C_walsh at 2:17 PM 8/13/2003

I was writing about 944 not turbo. You can get a 944 for $4000 but make sure it is inspected by a person that knows 944 inside and out. Check the Rennlist and go over everything 944 related. This has been covered a lot so I won't go over everything. Don't get one just because it is shiny.
Just did an Autotrader search for northern NJ, don't know where Jackson is....Great Adventure area? Anyway there are about 6 cars in my area from
$2-8,000 could be a deal hidden in there somewhere.

it would be like my car, pretty much, but probably a little rougher around the edges. it'll be fast enough.

for what it's worth, the 1985.5 and earlier cars have their advantages. they're a little easier on the wallet, and all the suspension upgrades for the later cars will work on the earlier ones.

one thing to remember about the 944: all your money should be spent on suspension and brakes. don't waste your money trying to get more power out of the N/A engine. leave the N/A one bone stock. if you get a turbo, then spend cash on the engine. for $6,000 into a 944 8v N/A engine you'll end up with literally HALF the horsepower that the same money would have gotten out of a turbo.

cost of long-term ownership? if you could afford a Scirocco 16V or a Corrado G60, you can afford a 944 easily. they're cheaper to own than an AWD DSM, and about as reliable as a tank.

I don't know enough about the 300zx to give you a good number. I will say that I have never driven a 300 that will outhandle a 944. That said it is a question of what you want to do with the car. I think number wise 0-60 they are similar. Ease of maintenance I would give the 944 the long term durability hands down.

my money is on the 944, not even a 911 with 50 more hp can lap better than a properly set up 944.

I work at a Porsche Dealership and I see these all the time. Most are pieces of crap with owners who spend $5,000 on it just to "Fit In" with all the other Porsche's. These cars are like sore thumbs when the come in.

BUT that one looks good

The Porsche Boxster is the next 944

944 Turbo S variant was tuned to 250 HP weighed 2600 lbs and "very" quick (would probably own the 300ZX), 944 Turbo only had 215 HP and the 944 was rated at 150 HP...I don't think either of these could run with the Z
