I only know of a few bands that play surf rock and I really like it I was wondering if anybody knew of any other bands. The ones that I listen to are Pixies, Frank Black and the Catholics, Link Ray, and Dick Dale. For the ones of you that don't know Frank Black was also in the Pixies.

Mermen  Los Straightjackets ... I dunno if I'd call the pixies surf rock -- well, I guess their later stuff would be ... earlier stuff was more of a post-punk-kitchen-sink

If you can find their stuff there used to be a local band here in Portland, OR that was called Surf Trio. The name sounds cheesey but they were like Surf/Punk/Pop. Or also another group was called Satan's Pilgrims, and I think they are also from around here.

Jack Johnson is awesome, but he's not surf rock. He's a sweet performer and aweomse movie producer though... still not surf rock. His musics awesome as is, I hope he doesnt try something weird:)Going to see him and Ben Harper at the TBird stadium, Aug 22:)

hell yah on Agent Orange!Bloodstains....mmm classic punk rock that would send mr jack johnson running for his nouveau jimmy buffet surfer hippie fantasy world but moving on... I agree on the los straitjackets suggestion. Also, shadowy men on a shawody planet were really good (kids in the hall theme song too!). There is a awesome local surf-rock band that goes by the name of the one night standards. I doubt you'd be able to find anything by them though.

My dad was in a surf-rock cover band in the Philippines in the 60s.  They used to cover stuff by The Ventures, The Shadows, Jan and Dean and the Beach Boys. The Ventures were cool. I get a kick out of them... they did Tequila and Hawaii 5-0. I love a song of theirs called Telstar or something....

My favorite Beach Boys stuff is the later non-surf music,IE Pet Sounds, Smile(or Smiley Smile,whatever they called it),or the ironically titled Surf's Up . As for " Real" surf music,I like Dick Dale,the Ventures,The Mermen,and I say Agent Orange is surf rock. BTW,anybody know where to find those old surf movies on DVD? Endless Summer seems to be the only one widely available.

I saw the Ventures at Toad's Place in New Haven, CT in the early 80s. I must have 70 or so Ventures albums in the basement.

Seriously though...
All of the above mentioned bands are really awsome. You can never go wrong with Shadowy Men on a Shadowy planet, Man or Astro Man, and Los Straighjackets (awsome live shows). Some other really good ones are The Bomboras, The Sentinals, The Chantays, The Penetrators, The Lively Ones, and The Marketts.
That should be enough for the hodads for now.

No not local for you... but they are nationaly known bands. Some like the Sentinals are old school surf and some are new school. They are all good though. Keep looking for them they can be found.

The Treblemakers My friend was in a great surf band called Club Wash from here in Portland, they put out a 7 inch. Someone mentioned Satan's Pilgrims, they were a really top-notch surf band, and at their high-point had THREE guitars! You might want to look for some Pebbles or Nuggets collections of early surf bands, sometimes they are the most interesting, because they've got crazy ideas.
